Caring for Your Flowers

Geraniums

Geraniums grow best in full sun but can tolerate moderate light. They like moist, well- drained soils.  Allow the soil to dry near the surface before watering.  To keep flowers coming continuously throughout the summer, remove the spent flower heads as they begin to deteriorate. This will prevent seeds from forming and force the plant into producing additional blooms. It also improves plant appearance as well as reducing the chance for disease.  These flowers thrive in temperatures of 60-70 degrees during the day and about 55 degrees at night.  Keep away from windy or drafty locations.

Impatiens

Impatiens prefer moderate light, especially morning sun and afternoon shade.  It is best to keep them evenly moist.  Rippled or severely cupped leaves signify over-feeding while yellow leaves are a sign of under-feeding.  They like temperatures in the 50-60 degree range where there isn’t a draft.

Begonias

With begonias, light is the key to a good blossom so keep them in moderate light (a bright east or west window is recommended).  Be careful of full sunlight which causes pale leaves.  Water thoroughly but let the soil surface dry slightly between waterings.  It may be helpful to mist regularly.

Dahlias

Dahlias thrive in an open, sunny location with adequate water.  If planting outside, mid-April through May is ideal when the ground temperature has reached about 60 degrees.  A low-nitrogen fertilizer can be helpful during the growing seasonwithin 30 days of planting and 3-4 weeks after that.
